Sunday Assembly Podcast #4 – Dr Tamara Davis Shows Us Her Dark Side

… and by “dark side” I mean she talks about dark energy and dark matter. Just to be clear, in case you listen to the whole show waiting for a Sith reference.

Anyhoo…. this week we have as our guest Dr Tamara Davis, Associate Professor and Australian Research Council Future Fellow from the University of Queensland, Australia. Tamara is a cosmologist interested in investigating new fundamental physics, such as the properties of dark energy and dark matter and the mass of the neutrino. A winner of the 2011 Australian Institute of Physics Women in Physics Lectureship, the 2011 Queensland Tall Poppy Award, the 2009 Australian L’Oreal Women in Science Fellowship and the Astronomical Society of Australia’s Early Career Research Award, Dr Davis joined the astrophysics team at UQ to work on the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, which has mapped ~220,000 galaxies across half of the observable universe. She and the WiggleZ team are using that data to test our theory of gravity and try to figure out the nature of dark energy and dark matter.

Tamara was the guest speaker at Sunday Assembly Brisbane in March and she did an AMAZING job, so we recorded it and that’s what you’ll hear on this show, interspersed with Sanderson and Pippa’s commentary. Here’s a link to download Tamara’s slide deck, if you want to play along.

Enjoy!

However he turned his situation around and today runs a charity called Signal Flare that provides free clothing for Brisbane’s homeless community. It’s an inspiring story that will make sure you never think about homeless people in the same way ever again.

Sunday Assembly Podcast #2 – Dr David Bramwell

On episode two of The Official Sunday Assembly Podcast, Pippa, Sanderson and Cameron chat with guest Dr David Bramwell!

Dr Bramwell was a recent guest speaker at Sunday Assembly London and is the creator of the successful Cheeky Guide series, founder and host of Brighton’s Catalyst Club and singer-songwriter in the band Oddfellows Casino (Nightjar Records). His music and spoken word material have been featured on BBC radio 1, 3,4 and 6.

David has written books on subjects ranging from difficult words to sexuality for Penguin, Harper Collins and DK, has spoken at and hosted TEDx events, curated a tent at Port Eliot Festival and, together with fellow musician Eliza Skelton, entertained festival and cinema audiences with “Sing-along-a-Wickerman”.

He joins us mostly to talk about his involvement in organising “Brighton Zocalo“… and bullsharks.

Zocalo is a Mexican word, like piazza or plaza, referring to the spaces in a city where people naturally congregate. On Zocalo Day people step out from their home, plonk a chair on the street and get to know their neighbours.
